Celebration for Our First Graduates!
On November 16, 2014, over 150 students, donors and professionals gathered at the Joint Distribution Committee offices for an event that's been five years in the making; the first graduation ceremony honoring the young men and women who have completed their college education through participation in the Feuerstein Academic Integration Program for Students of Ethiopian Descent.

Establishes in 2010, the Academic Integration Program is a joint venture between the Institute and the Joint Distribution Committee, supported by the UJA Federation of New York, the Harvey and Gloria Kaylie Foundation, the Abraham Gertzman Fund of the Detroit Federation and the Caesaria Foundation. The program's goal is to assist deserving young men and women of Ethiopian origin in gaining admittance to the most prestigious departments at Israel's top universities, such as their faculties of Medicine and Law. Once matriculated, we continuously provide our students with academic, cognitive, social and financial support to ensure their academic career is a success. One hundred and four students have participated in the program; to date, nineteen have completed their education and joined the workforce as lawyers, nurses, therapists and social workers (the medical program is seven years - we eagerly await the graduation of our first doctors!).

The energy at the celebration event was high, and the mood was joyous. Several professionals - including the Institute's Rabbi Rafi Feuerstein and Professor Yossi Tamir, President of the Joint Distribution Committee and Udi Shavit, Deacon of the Hebrew University - spoke of the student's success and the program's impact on Israeli society, before wishing our graduates well on their career paths. Recent graduate Yael Gadmo delighted the crowd by sharing her beautiful voice and singing for those assembled.

The truly special evening was rounded out by the presentation of certificates of completion, distributed by Tazeta Gramay and Ezra Obei, the Campus Coordinators at Bar Ilan and Hebrew Universities, and Anat Cagan and Dr. Lea Yosef, who provide ongoing support to the students throughout their educational journey. Congratulations to the graduates - may you move from strength to strength!
